Mormons and the great State of Utah are dedicated to upholding the United States' Federal polygamy laws, right? Well, not so fast, It seems that Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, who himself comes from polygamist roots, has said on numerous occasions he won't prosecute polygamists in Utah. He made this comment while addressing the Mormon faithful in St. George, Utah, he made a similar comment that was captured on a BBC interview when he said, "there aren't enough beds in the Utah prisons to accomodate all of the polygamists living in Utah" (watch video) and he's said it on numerous other occasions. And now, he'll be one of the featured speakers at a polygamist "Legal Conference" that's going to be held at Utah's Snowbird Resort on September 25, 2009. Shurtleff will be there along with other Mormon legal luminaries who all seem to specialize in defending polygamists rather then prosecuting them.

For only $125 you too can attend this "Legal Conference" and learn how to skirt Federal anti-polygamy laws, or obtain defense counsel if bad old Uncle Sam is going after you. In fact, conference organizers were nice enough to highlight on their flyer, "call for group rates". So, feel free to call ahead and negotiate special rates if you're planning on attending with all of your wives, husbands and children too.

Flyer for Polygamy Legal Conference:

Principle Voices is an organization that lobbies for the legalization of polygamy, provide education on polygamy and generally advocates polygamy in America. It was originally organized on behalf of polygamst families and members of the Mormon culture, and is organized under Federal Law as a 501(c)93) not-for-profit corporation, so it can operate without paying taxes to the Federal Government. Notice how its "OK" to utilize Federal Laws when they are deemed beneficial (like propagating polygamy), but can be circumvented when they are deemed malevolent (like not paying taxes). Principle Voices' advisory board is made up primarily of individuals from "outside the culture" who are professionals in a variety of fields including law and medicine; and, its steering comittee includes representatives from all of the "major" polygamist communities (except FLDS) as well as independents:

Item number 7 from "What is Principle Voices" says:

"We make every effort to distringuish ourselves from the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which abandoned polygamy beginning with the manifesto of 1890. However, the practice continued quietly in the church even beyond the 1904 second manifesto. In fact, it has continued to the present time among its membership because the LDS church still condones temple marriages of men to more than one female spouse for the afterlife".
