Today, the mendacious Mormons lie and say they were terribly persecuted by the "gentiles" (non-Mormons), in every land they ever settled, because of their "religious beliefs". For the record the Mormons settled in New York, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois and Utah, and the Mormons actually fought wars with the United States Governent in every one of these locations except for New York and Ohio. But, the REAL truth behind the Mormon's extremist history is that Joseph Smith and his Mormon theology taught that America and American Christians were "vile and decadent", that Mormons would "conquer" America and that America would be convert into the Mormon's very own "Mormon Kingdom of Zion". INCREDIBLY, the Mormons also owned slaves in New York, Ohio and Illinois at a time when slavery had been relegated to states south of the Mason-Dixon line. And, it was actually for this reason that Smith and his Mormons specifically migrated out of New York and Ohio by 1838, and into Missouri, because Missouri was a slave state.
1830 - Joseph Smith is forced to move his main contingent of Mormons out of York to Kirtland, Ohio, and strategically sends a second smaller contingent of Mormons to settle in western Missouri, specifically because Missouri is a “northern state, but was admitted to the Union as a slave State during the "Missouri Compromise" of 1820. Smith's Missouri contingent founds the town of Independence, Missouri, which is so named to signify the Mormon’s independence from the United States of America.
1831 - Joseph Smith and his followers in Kirtland, Ohio are very concerned about slavery being prohibited in the northern states when the issue of slavery is brought up in Congress. Joseph Smith’s belief that slavery is a “divine institution” is documented in this passage from History of the Church:
“…this was but one of a series of such petitions from New England which Mr. Adams presented to the House of Representatives. In fact upon his entrance as a member of the House, in 1831, (following his term of President of the United states) he had begun an agitation of the slavery question in congress” - History of the Church
1836 - Joseph Smith and his main contingent of Mormons in Kirtland, Ohio are visited by Federal agents who remind them that slavery is banned in States north of the Mason-Dixon line. But, slavery and polygamy are not only the only two reasons for the escalating conflict between Mormons and non-Mormons during this period of time in Kirtland. Smith is angered at being admonished by Federal Agents who are abolitionists, and writes a letter that is published in April of 1836 in the Messenger and Advocate, a Mormon Newspaper.
DEAR SIR: —This place (Kirtland) having recently been visited by a gentleman who advocated the principles or doctrines of those who are called ABOLITIONISTS, and his presence having created an interest in that subject, if you deem the following reflections of any service, or think they will have a tendency to correct the opinions of the Southern public,...you are at liberty to give them publicity... I FEAR that the sound might go out, that 'an Abolitionist' had held forth several times to this community,...all, except a very few, attended to their own vocations, and left the gentleman to hold forth his own arguments to nearly naked walls.I am aware that many, who PROFESS to preach the Gospel, complain against their brethren of the same faith, who reside in the South, and are ready to withdraw the hand of fellowship, because they will not renounce the principle of slavery, and raise their voice against every thing of the kind. This must be a tender point, and one which should call forth the candid reflections of all men, and more especially before they advance in an opposition calculated to lay waste the fair states of the South, and let loose upon the world a community of people, who might, peradventure, OVERRUN OUR COUNTRY, AND VIOLATE THE MOST SACRED PRINCIPLES OF HUMAN SOCIETY, CHASTITY AND VIRTUE.... I do not believe that the people of the North have any more right to say that the South shall not hold slaves, than the South have to say the North shall.
How any community can ever be excited with the CHATTER of such persons, boys and others, who are too indolent to obtain their living by honest industry, and are incapable of pursuing any occupation of a professional nature, is unaccountable to me; and when I see persons in the free states, signing documents against slavery, it is no less, in my mind, than an army of influence, and a DECLARATION OF HOSTILITIES, against the people of the South. What course can sooner divide our union? After having expressed myself so freely upon this subject, I do not doubt, but those who have been forward in raising their voices against the South, will cry out against me as being uncharitable, unfeeling, unkind, and wholly unacquainted with the Gospel of Christ...the first mention we have of slavery is found in the Holy Bible,...And so far from that prediction being averse to the mind of God, it remains as a lasting monument of the DECREE OF JEHOVAH, to the shame and confusion of all who HAVE CRIED OUT against the South, in consequence of their holding the sons of Ham in SERVITUDE.
I can say, the CURSE IS NOT YET TAKEN OFF FROM THE SONS OF CANAAN, neither will be until it is affected by as great a power as caused it to come; and the people who INTERFERE THE LEAST WITH THE PURPOSES OF GOD in this matter, will come under the LEAST CONDEMNATION BEFORE HIM; and those who are determined to pursue a course, which shows an opposition, and a feverish restlessness against the DECREES OF THE LORD, will learn, when perhaps it is too late for their own good, that God can do his own work, without the aid of those who are not dictated by His counsel.
Joseph Smith
These actual events in Mormon history, and more, are documented at Mormon Timeline
My bad, I didn't provide the best examples here to prove that Mormon were pro-slavery and owned slaves. However, If you go through the entire timeline however , there are a number of references between 1830 and 1838 that support the FACT that Mormons owned slaves in the Northern States, at a time when slavery was banned north of the Mason Dixon line. Additionally, there are many other references to "Mormons and slavery" that illustrate the Mormons true feelings about slavery. The above snippet was really designed to capture your interest and pull you into the Timeline, but I didn't do a good job of doing that.
Please look at "1836" in the Mormon Timeline. In 1836, Joseph Smith is angered after being visited in Kirtland, Ohio and rebuked by Federal Agents, who are abolitionists (you have to ask yourself, why would abolitionists bother visiting Smith and his Mormons at all). In his arrogance, Smith then writes an article in his Mormon Newspaper, the Messenger and Advocate, which is basically an admission that Mormons own slaves in Ohio in 1836. You should also keep in mind that the Mormons were forced out of New York in 1830, and he sent an advance contingent to settle in Missouri that same year (because Missouri was a slave State), as his main contingent headed to Ohio. The idea was that his advance contingent would "get things ready" in Missouri for Smith and the main contingent, which would arrive later. All of this information was contained in "The Book" I found in the aptly named "Mormon Institutute" when I was in college in 1977.
Also, look at my "News Flash". In the coming weeks, I will add an entire new body of work dedicated to providing additional proof about Mormons and their support of slavery. Mormon support FOR slavery is another little known fact that the Mormon media machine has almost been able to quash and delete from their REAL history. For some reason all TBM's seem to be "lobotimized and brainwashed" into believing the propaganda the Mormon Church disseminates, which would be the nation's 12th largest media corporaton if it were a real tax paying entity. At the same time, the Mormon Church and its agents buy up and sequester any real history, to make it harder for anybody to find this real truth.
I assume you are Mormon, and have bought into the notion that "Mormon persecution" was a function of abolitionism, but this is just another lie. Your comment, "In fact, I had an ancestor who migrated with the Mormons and had his family's land taken by the government three times." is also not supported with any real facts or documentation, either. And, your message is exactly the message the Mormon Church wants you to propagate, so everybody will hate the "Government" and the "Elders of Zion" can "rush in and save the Constitution" in accordance with "The Doctrine of the Constitution Hanging by a Thread". "The Government" never took land away from any settlers, or Mormons. Rather, they gave land away to help settle the western territories. If you read my entire website, you will see that it was actually the Mormons who were involved in the most heinous acts of treachery and sedition against loyal non-Mormon citizens of the United States. This happened in every location the Mormons ever settled - New York, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois and Utah (what's the excuse for that). It is time to wake-up and see the truth. The Mormon religion has been blaming the "Gentile" for their so-called "religious persecution" in order to deflect any responsible for the terrible things they did themselves. The real truth is that the Mormons brought most of their problems on themselves.
Also, look at the bigger picture here. Brigham Young referred to slavery as a "divine Institution", the Utah Territory was a slave territory, A.O. Smoot, one of Brigham Young's danites and the ex-Mayor of Salt Lake owned slaves in Utah and the Utah territory fought along side the "Confederacy" during the civil war (for slavery), until it was clear the Confederacy was going to lose, at which point they switched sides (such duplicity). Blacks were always "cursed with the mark of Cain" and denied the priesthood until 1978. And, they only got it then because of political pressure rather than because of a divine message from God. The history of Mormons and slavery in New York and Ohio is harder to document. But, I have some amazing stuff coming soon.
Finally, I have a very, very old volume of "History of the Chuch" that does not have any numerical referencing at all. My copy of "History" only has section titles. It does not even have any page numbers. This is because the version I have is a very old version that was never referenced or had page numbers, and it was simply scanned into HTML files by a source I cannot divulge. I have 7 files, which contain over 1 million words. As I said, it is a very early version that is largely in pristine form. However, it does contain actual notes that have been written in by modern members of the Mormon Church who are involved in trying to re-write and sanitize "History of the Church" to remove as much of the damning evidence as they can that was documented by the Mormon Church itself. I did not go over to the Mormon bookstore and by the nice sanitized version that is all numbered and referenced. My version is probably from around 1920, and is largely unsanitized. So, I would expect to see important revelations that are not included in the nice "Christianized" fake versions of "History" that you can buy at the Mormon bookstory today.
